With the reform of September 4, 2018 in Royal Decree-Law 11/2018, of August 13, foreign students can process the study visa in Spain. Call us if you want to receive more information. We have a service of immigration lawyers available to help you with all the paperwork.

Procedures according to course duration

If you are not a national of a country of the European Union or of Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland and you want to stay legally in Spain, the procedures to be followed will vary according to the length of time you want to study in Spain:

  • More than 6 months: you need to obtain a type D student visa in your country of origin and obtain a student residence card (NIE) during the first 30 days of your stay in Spain.
  • Between 3 and 6 months: a visa is required (type C) but no further formalities are required in Spain. This type of visa does not allow obtaining the NIE upon arrival in Spain.
  • Less than 3 months (90 days): a short-stay student visa type C is required. This type of visa does not allow obtaining the NIE upon arrival in Spain.

Procedures necessary to apply for a student visa at the Spanish Consulate in your home country:

  • Pre-register in a public or private school in Spain.
  • Go to the Spanish Consulate to process your study visa with the certificate or letter of acceptance issued by that center.

Documents required for the processing of a student visa

  • Valid passport
  • Admission to an educational institution, public or private, to pursue or extend studies or to carry out research or training work.
  • The content of the curriculum, training or research to be carried out
  • Medical insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation in case of accident or sudden illness during the entire stay in Spain.
  • A medical certificate attesting that he/she does not suffer from any of the diseases subject to quarantine provided for in the international sanitary regulations.
  • The availability of means of subsistence and lodging for the period requested and, if applicable, to guarantee the return to the country of origin.
  • Criminal record certificate issued by the authorities of the country of origin or of the country where the applicant has resided for the last 5 years.

A course that allows you to apply for a student visa in Spain must be full time (20 hours per week), and can only be with Spanish. Only schools that are accredited by the Instituto Cervantes are entitled to issue documentation for this procedure. SPANISH 360 is an accredited school and issues these documents to students studying at the accredited center at Calle Carretas 14, Office B1.3 Madrid, 28012.

The process is relatively easy. You book the course, prepare all the documents and submit the application in your country of residence or directly in Spain.

The residence card is valid for one year and is renewable as long as your studies have continuity and are of the same academic level. It is important to understand this point: you can change school, but you cannot change academic level unless there is a justification from the center where you have studied.

If you want to change academic level, it is good that you consult us first or talk to a professional to see if it is possible. For example, if you have a Master’s degree and you want to extend it with a language course (Spanish), it is possible if your previous Master’s degree was in another language such as English.
The application, in official form (EX-11), original and copy, must be submitted to the competent body for processing (Foreigners Office or, failing that, Police Station) or to any other official registry, with the following documentation:

  • Full passport or valid travel document. Only photocopies of the photo, visa and personal information sheets are required.
  • Photocopy of the NIE (both sides)
  • Authorization of parents or guardians, in case of minors
  • Documentation proving that you have sufficient financial means for the period of stay in Spain. The minimum balance will be the result of multiplying about 600€ by the months of duration of your stay. It has to be the document stamped by the bank. Also, you can present a statement of account of the Spanish bank stamped by the bank with the movements corresponding to the last 6 months with a value of about 600€ and a minimum final balance of about 3200€.
  • Proof that you have medical insurance that covers medical expenses during your stay in Spain. Repatriation is not necessary in case of NIE renewal.
  • Three recent passport size photographs, in color and with white background.
  • Certificate of achievement of the completed course and enrollment in the new course, is the documentation that proves that you have passed the relevant tests or requirements for the continuation of your studies.
  • Updated census registration form (to be picked up at the Town Hall without appointment)

In cases of entry with a visa, when the duration of the visa is less than three months, you may extend your stay provided that the Spanish Consulate or Embassy has issued a study visa with the remark “STUDIES TOTAL 180 DAYS”. This extension may not exceed three months in a period of six months. You have to follow the same procedures of the NIE renewal with the only difference that you have to present the certificate of criminal record of the countries of residence of the last 5 years, legalized and translated into Spanish.

In the event that your extension of stay has been denied, you must be formally informed of the reasons for the denial with all the guarantees of appeal.

Frequently Asked Questions

The duration of a regular class is 1.5 hours, with a frequency of twice a week.

The classes are divided into four aspects that we try to keep at the same level. Oral expression, written expression, listening comprehension and reading comprehension. We follow the CEFR parameters to structure the classes and make sure that the students are taking the content of their respective level.

All of our teachers are native Spanish speakers and speak English as a second language. We not only have teachers from Spain but also from Latin America, so the students get used to all kinds of accents.

Of course it is! Before joining the classes you will have an interview to determine your level and your objectives to be achieved in order to place you in a group with a similar level and objective to yours.

We have many social activities at the school, such as board game nights, movie nights, movie outings or even trips to other cities.

Each class consists of the teacher and a maximum of 6 students. We assure our students that small groups will never exceed this number because for us quality is the most important thing, as well as the opportunity to approach students to both the Spanish language and culture, to a greater or lesser extent depending on their needs.

We provide our students with the necessary material for the classes, bringing only a notebook and pen to take notes.

In case you have special needs, you can opt for private classes, which have great flexibility and can be adjusted to any type of schedule.

At the end of the level we will give you a certificate of participation with no curricular value, but in case you need an official certificate we also prepare students specifically to take the DELE exam and obtain an official certificate.

In the case of group classes, students can cancel a maximum of once a month, with 24 hours notice, receiving during the same week a private 45-minute make-up class with their teacher so as not to fall behind their classmates in class.
In the case of private classes you can change the date and time of your class with a minimum of 24 hours notice without suffering any penalty for the change.
